In general if you want to dip your toe into Brazil as a tourist Fos do Iguaçu in the south is one of the few places that is properly set up for overseas tourists it's a town that was build for tourism but has the worlds most spectacular water falls (that make Niagra look like dripping tap), a nature park ans you can go over the border to Argentina and shit hole Paraguay. Regarding safety in Rio, the areas around copacabana, Ipanema, lemme are safe.

I know people who have been coming to Rio for years and have never left Copa, there is enough going on there. But to get the best you need to get to Centro. The metro is safe and easy, takes 20 minutes. I've had no problem in Centro and feel safe. I wouldn't like to be wandering the streets after dark, it can be a tad sketchy like many major cities.

Yeah I agree, find yourself feet so you don’t look like you’ve just landed! VM is completely safe, there’s private security. However be careful on the roads approaching. If you arrive by bus, the left hand fork has always been better, more people about. If going by taxi it’s I think better to get off at the entrance of VM, just as you round the corner and start to see the ho’s, rather than arriving “in style” — not that it makes that much difference though.

Altho the exchange rate is over 7.5 I'm get just over 7.1 at the ATM. My friend is getting 7.7 at the cash changers so cash is king here. Everyone here pays by card, which is probably the best way. Either way it's making it quite reasonable here.

ZAP is simply WhatsApp, this is the only way to contact girls here. Also most (if not all) girls don't speak English, so you need to message in Portuguese. Don't think you will get by with Spanish, they don't understand. It really is worth learning some basics before coming here.

Sim cards are not easy, I got mine at Rio Sol mall. Try casa y video shops to buy a SIM card, Vivo is good and top up at a Vivo store.

Rio Sul is easy as they speak English and can activate it for you. Otherwise buy one cheaper from anywhere and ask a Copa street newsagent nicely.

It’s advisable to be very careful walking thru the tunnel from Copa to Shopping Rio Sul unless you’re sure of yourself. Better to jump on any bus. It’s only one stop.

The road to Rio Sol under the bridge was fine in the morning. But generally when it gets darker I'm not feeling as comfortable as I was 2 years ago. There are generally a lot less tourists around and very few foreigners. As night falls the back streets become deserted and walking back to the hotels becomes a tad sketchy.

Here's a quick guide to some of Centro buildings.

Cinelândia or carioca metro stops are good locations for TDM33, RB156, AA37 +++
Tdm is the street name avenida treze de maio, 33 refers to the building number.
RB Avenida Rio branco , AA rua Alvaro Alvim

Next is the room number TDM 33 2414 so that's apartment 2414 which is on floor 24. All elevators don't go to all floor. All elevators have a porter, learn your floor number and say when entering.
TDM & AA are open access. RB 156 you need to register with photo ID, a photo of your passport on your phone is ok. They give you a card which you swipe to get access to the lifts. It's a pita.
AA 37 has a lot of freelance girls working from apartments in this building, it's one of my regular haunts.

So I hop on the metro, 15 minutes to carioca from copa.
If possible try to get a metro pass you can top up, I'm using a riocard mais instead of buying single tickets. It's cheaper and there are big queues for the ticket machines.
I head for TDM33, lifts don't serve every floor so I don't think you can get a lift from floor 21 upwards but ive not worked it out yet
Lift to 21 floor and try 2102 Centro belles, nothing on interest for me. Up the fire stairs to lokal zen floor 24 2414 (it's 32 degrees today) nothing of interest again. What the hell try 2106 down 3 flights, no one there either but Julietta is working and someone has just taken her for 10 minutes (10? Wtf) I say I'll come back. There's buses to VM from there too, just along a bit before the park. Get off at Praca da Bandeira (let me know if you need more directions). The fun thing with trash places is that you get the weird and wonderful sometimes. The top floor of one had a cheery receptionist for a while who would greet you loudly with the special offer of "oral, vaginal, anal, inclusive!!". Varied in quality depending who was on. Occasionally there are good performers, and it's cheap enough to go for quantity through different floors until you find quality. Why do they work there if they're any good? Marmalade, to answer your question, yes that place on rua carioca is still open, it's number 59, I wasn't aware of it before today so i ventured in down the long not very inviting corridor and up the dark stairs at the end. I also looked at a few other trash places I'd been told about. Not far to walk to  praca olavo bilac. The dark room is on this road but on the opposite side are 3 small 'clubs' at number 11, 13 & 15. I’ve never stayed at either but the large number of hotels are either not p4p-friendly or else will charge you extra. You can always try booking a room for two but what I recommend is renting an apartment. Depending on your budget- Copa is more convenient though Ipanema is slightly more ‘upmarket’. You can book through Airbnb or when you get there. A bit more luxurious and a good mid-range option is an Aparthotel. There’s one on Barata Ribeiro (Copa) that I’ve stayed at — decent rooms, come and go as you please, with whom you please, and it even includes a maid service to clean the room daily. You can get a fully fitted suite with kitchen and bathroom, much better value than a hotel. Plus there’s a gym in the apartment block and it’s near the Metro, 2 short blocks (5-10 mins walk) from the beach.

I have heard 2nd hand that you can get girls into the Hilton but must pay an extra 50 USD. But I would email them and ask, make it clear it won't be the same girl every night.

Mask wearing is common place, 80% on the streets altho not mandatory. On public transport it is compulsory, metros etc.
Everywhere is open but bars and restaurants are meant to checks vaccine status, the larger places do, but generally only 10% check. Just a download of your vaccine history on your phone is enough, they can't read English mostly.
I think you still need a PCR test to enter
But it is mostly business as usual
They've postponed the carnival till April which is not bad thing because accommodation prices go thru the roof at carnival, 10 times the normal rates.
The vaccination roll out is going well here, you can just walk in and get vaccinated, lots of people queueing to get it and most are on the booster jab now
