The Turing Test is indeed named after the computer genius that was Alan Turing. His theory was that if you cannot tell from the answers given whether the respondent is human or a computer, then you can reasonably say that the computer is thinking.

The test is to devise something that a computer couldn't do, to avoid bots flooding the internet.

Yes its to prevent automated character recognition, more of a Captcha than a turing test which is an conversation model.
