The BBC headline appears tenuous - what the actual article states is "that these studies also suggest a possible mechanism underlying links between vaginal dysbiosis and oral sex."

Given that going down on women who may carry the Human Papillomavirus which gives women cervical cancer and men throat cancer, gum disease is hardly worth losing any sleep over. My mate had throat cancer suspected to have been through contracting HPV from going down on lasses back in his 20s, 30 years ago. He got sorted with just radiotherapy but he's had a loss of smell, taste and now suffers from tinnitus a result of the treatment.

The link between BV and oral sex has been known for some time. For example BV is more prevalent with women who have sex with women and who have receptive cunnilingus.

Given that BV is essentially an 'inbalance' of natural vaginal flora then it is reasonable to hypothesise that oral flora may interfere with the balance.

This study is only new, in that it puts forward a possible mechanism.
