Paying a deposit is not always a bad idea if you have done appropriate checks on the SP and are confident that they are reliable and professional in their business practices. Check their feedback on here and also checkout their AW feedback and the feedback and other SPs who have seen the person that left the feedback. Doing this you can usually spot the SPs who use fake feedback to make themselves look credible.

It does show some kind of commitment to turn up for the booking and may cover the SP's travel expenses if they are going to an outcall and then you no show.

Personally I would not be paying a deposit to an SP via bank transfer due to my name being shown on their bank statement and you needing to know the SP's name to make the transfer.

However, many SPs accept deposit payments via e-gift cards that you can buy online or in person in your local stores and load with a balance by paying in cash. There is usually a scratch off panel on the back of the physical cards that reveals a card code that you can message to the SP to allow them to apply the card's balance to their account with the retailer.  This is all totally anonymous for both the SP and you.  It works well and is pretty easy to do.
