Author Topic: Nice towns to visit and punt via rail? Baldock? Meldreth? Letchworth Garden City  (Read 1554 times)

Can anyone recommend nice towns to visit and punt along affordable train routes from Cambs? I thought it might be fun to explore a bit. Of course, I would like to visit and punt in Milton Keynes and St Albans, but there aren't easy or affordable routes there. So I was thinking of affordable routes and easily accessible towns via rail. These are some easy towns to get to; are any nice to visit and punt? (And of course, I will return the favour with reviews)

I'm not sure Stevenage counts as nice, but there is usually a number of SPs within walking distance of the station.
beware old 'Old Town' or residential though, they are not likely to be an easy walk (or cycle).

Jay I can recommend Alexa Divine External Link/Members Only. She's a stone's throw from Hertford EAST station (there are two stations in Hertford) which is on a train line from Liverpool Street.

The town itself is very pleasant. There's a river and park close to the station and the town has plenty of cafes,  restaurants and pubs. No shops anymore, obviously, like many other towns.

Why not head in the opposite direction into Suffolk and Norfolk?

Plenty of ladies advertising on both AW and Viva in Norwich (nice relaxed city), Ipswich and even Woodbridge. I’ve found joy in all three even though punting will always be hit and miss..

Stevenage and Hatfield for the punting (definitely not nice town views)……but once you’re on the train you might as well go to London I’d say

What’s more important, the visit or the punt?

Cheers, thanks for the suggestions.  :drinks:

I thought it would be fun to have a punt at every stop, but looking at the selection (such as at Letchworth Garden City) it's a big no! Searching some of the other towns one-by-one finds many have literally zero selection.

But some towns could be nice enough to visit (without punting), and then continuing the route I could punt elsewhere. I did something similar in the Netherlands before, beginning my day with a punt in Amsterdam, and then visiting several cities by train for leisure, eventually landing in Den Hague for more (and better) punting.

Thanks, after a search, Stevenage looks to have potential.

Given the state of punting, maybe the town would take precedence. So I could stop at one town for sightseeing, and punt at a different town.

She looks great, but on the Liverpool line from Cambridge that'd take 2 trains, and about 2 hours travel time: Cambridge -> Broxbourne -> Hertford East

I actually wanted to visit Norwich just to see KarlaHot, but she ended up leaving. External Link/Members Only

That's definitely a good idea. Tickets seem to be around £15-£20, but maybe I can find a single route that will do all three.

Bit of a deviation from the simple plan of hitting several cities on the same route, but I should do Petersborough (£10-15) since there were some SPs and possibly a strip club there worth seeing. The others were St Albans and MK, but the travel time (~2 hours) and cost (£30+) was too high.

You’ll need Ely on the list - definitely worth the hassle of a taxi from the station for elite skills.

Jay re Alexa.....you can also get to her place via Hertford North Station which is approx 1hr15  from Cambridge, changing once at ....Stevenage.

Maybe an option for Alexa in the morning, a decent pub lunch then someone else in Stevenage en-route home?

NB Alexa is approx 1 mile from Hertford North station, so a quick cab or Uber or 15 mins brisk walk

That's what I thought but I find that the X6 coach now goes via London (!!) and takes over 5 hours. Never used to.

Obviously so would the train journey, and very costly too.
