If you really want to stop, seek counselling. Tell your partner you're under stress and that you need to talk to someone about it. Counsellors see a lot of punters and WGs.

Is it that you just can't stop yourself but want to, saying that this will be the last punt is like saying I'll get hammered tonight but as of tomorrow I won't drink / smoke / whatever, in which case LL is spot on, see a councilor.

Or is it that you have an underlying phobia of catching something and passing on to the OH but otherwise don't have any issues with your secret hobby ? If you indulge in some of the higher risk activities then it would be understandable.

I guess what I'm saying is - what is the real underlying issue ?

I've never retired from the game as such. Often take time out, mainly financially driven, but have never walked away. I don't have a set routine either so sometimes I go a few months.

It depends how often you do it too.

If you only punt, say, 2-3 times a year, then you can manage this side of you and push it out of your mind for long enough without it becoming an issue for you and your partner.

However, if you do go frequently, each time saying 'never again', then there probably are issues here that should be talked about with a professional. In this scenario, you may not want to punt, yet still do it anyway. Replace punt with drink, and that is a cause for alarm, isn't it?

To echo what LanceVance says, I believe one definition of addiction used by professionals is along the lines of 'something which you have the compulsion to keep doing, despite negative effects'.  So if you're carrying on with it out of compulsion but don't really want to still be doing it, then yeh maybe some professional help is the answer.

I quite like doing all of the above - occasionally.  Punting as well.  And at the front of the list !

Personally I'm still very new to punting but have found it to be very addictive, just like so many other legal or illegal vices on offer in our society typically are.

However, unlike you, I haven't felt a need or desire to abstain or quit yet but expect if/when I do it'll be very hard to achieve. There'll always be that hot new girl showing up in the area who I expect will turn out to be my best ever punt.

For me the motivation to quit will have to be strong and, has already been mentioned, may involve some form of counselling or professional help.

Fear of catching an sti is not a big enough blip on my radar screen to warrant quitting, tbh.
