Author Topic: When do you think Thailand will be fully open for "fun?"  (Read 36438 times)

Evening everyone

I've been keeping abreast of news from Asia particularly Thailand, and using the thai Visa forum to keep abreast of an ever changing situation.

I usually go to Thailand twice a year, as well as another country in south east asia(done Vietnam Singapore and cambodia) and I was in Thailand in February just before the world went a little bit crazy.

What do people think the chances are of Thailand being open for those who can afford a long haul holiday before xmas? I was hopeful back in April that I could get over there in November, but as time passes I become more and more doubtful of getting into that country before 2021,and I think well into 2021 at least.

Thoughts?

tis not looking good for South East Asia at the moment with :-
Thailand: All foreign nationals are barred from entering Thailand and international passenger flights to Thailand are suspended.

Malaysia: Entry to Malaysia is prohibited, except for Malaysian nationals and foreign nationals holding certain categories of residency and employment passes.

Indonesia: All foreign nationals are barred from entering and transiting through Indonesia. Exceptions have been made for essential travellers, who will need to have a valid health certificate before being allowed to enter.

Philippines: British nationals will no longer be able to receive a visa on arrival and will not be able to enter the Philippines until further notice.

Singapore: People who need to visit in extenuating circumstances need to submit a Form 14. If you're given permission to enter Singapore, you will be issued with a 14-day Stay at Home Notice (SHN) and must pay $2,000 to carry out the quarantine at a government designated hotel.

Vietnam: Foreign tourists are currently banned from entering the country.

Cambodia: Travellers from all countries can now enter Cambodia, but must have a certificate to prove they are COVID-19 free, have proof of insurance that includes a minimum of US$50,000 for medical cover and have a visa before arrival. Cambodia have introduced a $3000 deposit for the COVID-19 service. Fees will be deducted for the test, an overnight stay in a waiting centre, meals at the waiting centre. and the remainder will be paid back. If one passenger tests positive, everyone who was on the same flight as them will be quarantined for 14 days.

I usually have a 3 or 4 month winter break n Malaysia every year, Just hoping I will get there this year but it's not looking good.

This is an extract from the Bangkok Post from the 22nd July

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration has approved the entry of foreign business reps, specialists, diplomats, migrant workers, exhibitors, film crews, medical tourists and Thailand Elite card members

They will all have to quarantine at state facilities on arrival

Full article here https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/1955703/thousands-of-foreigners-to-be-allowed-entry

The Thai government has been very cautious about re-opening even though no-one has been allowed into the country and they have only had around 3000 infections and 58 deaths. They haven't had any recent local infections for more than 40 days, the only infections have been Thais returning from abroad. Yesterday, despite some local opposition,  the government renewed its emergency powers for another month so I don't expect travel restrictions to be eased any time soon.

I have read some suggestions that Thailand might allow one resort to open that has its own airport and test their procedures for admitting tourists and monitoring what's going on but I suspect that this idea is not coming from the Thai government but is being floated by one of the tourists resorts.

I am in touch with several girls in Bangkok who have gone back to work in Soi Cowboy. They tell me there are very few customers and many girls. The one thing that strikes me in my chats is that all the girls are really scared of the virus.

So lots of girls available, no flights and no prospect of tourism in the near future. What a pisser!

I haven’t been following Thailand massively but with the case of the Egyptian soldier infecting everyone after sneaking out of quarantine I can’t imagine they are in any rush to open their borders up. Working people are being allowed back in but have to do quarantines and have tests, I think tourism is a long long way off.

Anecdotal evidence says that all such places have very few people available anyway. I went to a free lancer pickup club (Asia but not Thailand) in Nov 19 and it had ~60 girls there. I went in June and there were literally zero people in the place.

At this point I’d be amazed if travel was relatively free between these countries before Christmas.

Some very conflicting reports on Thailand, 2 links below about 2 cases reported on the 14 July & 400 people to isolate so how can there be 40 days of no reported cases on the 24 July ?

Thailand has been 50 days without confirmed local transmission of the corona virus, but two cases among foreigners this week has led to the self-isolation of more than 400 people and fears on social media of a new contagion.

You all forget Thailand is run by a military dictatorship. Why would they want to give honest information.

Quote
From 4 July, Thailand is exempt from the FCO advice against all non-essential international travel. This is based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.

However, the requirement to self-isolate on return to the UK from Thailand remains in place. See guidance on entering or returning to the UK.

So can go – if Thailand will have me – but will have to isolate for 14 days upon return. I hope this changes in August when I have weeks off. Also, the 14 day isolation is probably a plebian only law and doesn't apply to elite people like us, Mr Cummings, and Mr Farage.

Sadly I don't believe that Thailand will be accepting tourists from anywhere except possibly some ASEAN countries in the near future. But I wish you luck!

Thailand: All foreign nationals are barred from entering Thailand and international passenger flights to Thailand are suspended.

I'm working on the assumption that this year is write off and think about proper travel again mid-late 2021 and plan for an extended holiday then.

The Thai rulers are using Covid-19 as an excuse to keep tourists out of the country while they are dealing with large protests and unrest against the ruling party.

The protests are becoming larger and more problematic for the generals and they don't want a country full of tourists to be witnessing what will inevitably become a repeat of the bloody battles seen in Bangkok during 2010.

Covid19 has provided the ruling party with a valid reason to keep people out.

Just taken this off the Thai Embassy website :-

Note: Thailand has temporarily suspended the grant of visa on arrival at any international airport to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The suspension will last until September 30, 2020.

Thanks Asianfcuker. Brit passports are normally allowed in without a visa for 30 days.

But seems most won't be allowed in after all, unless you are a diplomat, medical tourist, married to a Thai, and so on... (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/entry-requirements)

For August, looks like I'll have to support local hos. Or maybe look at Europe.

Visa Exemption and Bilateral Agreement | ThaiEmbassy.com https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/changes-visa-exempt.php
The UK is on the list of 64 countries that don't currently require a visa for a 30 day tourist visit.

Still need to isolate for 14 days when you get there as well, really no point going currently. Have heard there are loads of girls and no customers, would be great if there was a reasonable way of actually getting there without restrictions.

Can you isolate in a hotel of your own choosing? Maybe one with a private pool?!

I wish. It's a state quarantine facility and you pay for it.

I’ve a flight booked Nov 6, Emirates not flying from Birmingham yet no flights in or out, so I’m feeling it’s going to be a no.

I reckon 2021 at the earliest mores the pity.

Will we get out there in the next 12 months unlikely.

Sadly i'm inclined to agree it certainly looks a long way off

The Thai Government are using the Virus to try and change the tourist demographics, even their health minister has referred to Caucasian people as dirty foreigners and creating an anti westerner feeling within the country  yet seems to have forgotten where the virus came from.
So i think it will certainly a long time before Europeans will be able to return.
Officially they have been covid free for 60 odd days, so they won't want to rush to open up.
On the flip side a few million people are out of a job connected to the tourist trade  without any state help.
Methinks its going to be a very bumpy few months ahead for Thailand politics.
Best guess at the moment would be when there is a vacine, sadly

Politics doesn’t come into it, it’s an Army ruled country, and they ain’t letting go anytime soon

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand today, not before 2021:

https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/thailands-international-borders-not-re-opening-for-tourists-until-2021-tat

The government, army or whoever can try to say they want high quality tourists all they want - just the same as they've tried to stop mongering for years. It'll never happen. Isaan girls will still line the streets of Bangkok whenever we return.

Mind you, maybe I'll try elsewhere next year...

I have met a lot of girls from Isaan and was wondering if anyone has been there looking for local action?

Been there loads of times, it’s not as in your face as in the tourist resorts but the main Cities in issan have all small bar areas with action to be had. You also have options like Thai friendly etc but I haven’t bothered with that as it’s too much faff for me. Best pair of real Thai tits I ever got my hands on was a girl from udon Thani

I am sure you are sadly right about 2021.

I was reading an article in the Pattaya Mail that Walking Street is transforming into a 24 hour food destination. Not the kind of mouthful I had in mind

Ha-ha! Over priced tourist trap anyway. Had planned a trip to Soi 6 this year - I'm sure next year will be possible, but honestly not sure I want to deal with 'dirty foreigner' mentality anymore. Maybe time to try Vietnam or Cambodia, or Manilla if things calm down there enough

True. But the working-class Red shirts haven't gone away and won't put up with being near destitute for much longer. The middle-class Yellow shirts are starting to question the lack of action from their absentee King.
Another (Thai style) rumpus is brewing......

Had a semi legit session today with a regular of mine, she had been stuck out there for 4 months unable to get back until 3 weeks ago (had to Q for 2 weeks on return)
She said things are quite desperate out there for many people, in many areas the army are stopping everything and in areas where things are open, there are no customers, currently they are only expecting visitors from nearby countries at the most and even then, these visitors may be restricted to what activities they can do

Any recommendations for a Pattaya substitute for this week or/and the next, given the pandemic? A little hesitant on Istanbul.

I suppose it will have to be a country on this list.

I can associate with that, mongering in Thailand Pattaya - you are a 2 week millionaire. What I find hard to adjust to is that you have much more time to take things slowly than a 1 hour punt where you trying to get your moneys worth in the hour. You have to put yourself in a different mindset, the girl is not going anywhere, you can do it whenever you feel like it, take it slowly and sex is on tap whenever you want it.

In fact, I have to kick the girl out because I want some time to myself!

Thailand has now decided to allow anyone to visit as long as they do the 14 day quarantine which has to be paid for. It used to be just low risk Covid-19 countries who were allowed to visit. Everyone who enters will get a 90 day visa. Under the old scheme only 825 people visited Thailand!

Of course you still have to battle your way through virus infested airports and flights to get there....
