To preface, i don't intend to scaremonger but:

I have a a separate email address which i only use for porn or escorting for sites like this or aw for example.

if this site were to get 'hacked' ashley madison style, what ties us to this site? by having an email no one knows about good enough to get overlooked ?

you hear of websites publishing email adresses of users but that wont really affect me as no one else knows my porn/escorting email.

can someone shine a light on this, please ?

Why should anything change just because there's a new owner. There's loads of 'what if's' in life, if you are worried then delete your email and log out and forget about this site.

I have several email addresses for many different purposes. A few that I use for this and other sites of a similar ilk are generally something using google or live, not traceable to me AFAIK.
On one of them I occasionally get mails saying ‘we know you have been watching porn, send bitcoin or else’

Nothing has ever come of it, and they seem to be sent out in their millions in the hope someone will bite.

In the digital world we live in I am guessing nothing is 100% safe. My emails for sites like UKP were set up in an internet cafe years ago, and the site is only accessed on a phone that is not registered to anyone, so hopefully if anyone hacks the site they will hit a blank. Not sure what ISP data this site holds or if that could be used if the site was hacked.

I am sure there are more learned and experience punters who can elaborate.

For someone who complained about off topic you sure seem to be doing a fair bit of off topic even starting this off topic thread, perhaps join a computer forum

I’ve just used your IP address to reverse lookup your details. I now know your name and social media login. In another few hours I should know your driving licence, address and unique tax payers reference (UTR).

Please pay 2.7 btc or I will tell everyone, including Reginald Bosanquet on News at Ten.

Don’t be daft. A hack could maybe expose the data you’ve entered, your IP address (which could in theory be used to identify you but only if your isp can be made to give up your details - they will only do that for the police). And dates and times of your logins.

easy tiger  :D :timeout:

yes, the new ownership is what got me thinking about it (im sure they will continue to do a fantastic job)  but i mean in general aswell. My understanding is having a separate email should be good enough to thwart the limited tech knowledge of partners and girlfriends.

true J999 i should probably ask this on a computer forum, but there are a fair few techies on here too im sure they wouldn't mind explaining.

im not against off topic ?

If only.  An IP address is issued by Nominet which is publicly searchable.  That said, its possible  (or was, at any rate, when i first registered in 2010) to request ex-directory status similar to old BT landine regs.

Not quite

Nominet manage name web addresses not numbered IP addresses

The nominet Whois database identifies the registered owner of an address, and that can be anonymised.
For example you could identify either the individual/corporate owner of a website, or just their hosting provider
Your IP address/addresses is/are issued by your network provider.  Probably a unique master address to your router and a localized address from your router to your device.

Check whatismyipaddress.com to identify the unique Internet address allocated by your provider
The use a Whois search to identify that.  You will find the details of your Internet Provider not of you personally

Most ISPs use dynamic IP addresses - they change over time, particularly when you reboot the router.

Previous posters have covered this but there's no truth in anything you've written. You're confusing ip addresses with domain names, which have absolutely nothing to do with this discussion.

An IP address can not be identified with an individual, unless the ISP that allocated that IP can be forced to give up the information.

For example, if you find out that some dirty old whoremeister posted on this board and their IP address was 90.240.8.180, you can find out through whois that they are a dynamic address allocated by Vodafone Consumer Broadband in Uxbridge. If you ask them nicely(*) they will tell you my name and address. As rich mentions the IP allocation is dynamic (my ip tomorrow will likely be different) so they would have to do this by matching the ip address with who it was allocated to at the requested time.

(*) extremely nastily, with a court order.
