Someones just told me that the government has shut all the GUM clinics and you now have to pay or go to your GP... is this true?

Cannot comment on the situation in Englandshire, but here in the People's  Socialist Democratic Republic of Scotland, the clap clinics are operating normally with lots of bright eyed young nurses eager to examine your bits.
Believe me. I know.

With the goverment cut backs a few are closing, some of the smaller clinics like the one in Queen's park.
St Barts now give you self tests packs that you do at home and post to the lab.

tbh, I wouldnt think anything about paying £10 a visit, if it keeps the service going

Absolute bollox
The GUM clinics are funded / controlled by the local NHS Community Health trusts. The government have absolutely no input into medical priorities, its all done locally

Dont encourage them,we already pay for the NHS through taxes. You may be prepared to pay but there are plenty that wont and it will lead to the spread of STIs.

The last time I went to one of these clinics I remember waiting ages and thinking what the hell am I waiting for given that all I'm there to do is give blood and urine samples. It seems mad when you think about it why don't we do that at the GP but even better is the mail in service.
Really all we really need for routine testing is a place where you can go grab a kit, provide the sample and drop it off at the same place.

One of the nurses told me that many book in for a routine test but when they get in the actual room there is more problems than they initially admit to.I don't mind waiting as the queues are usually relatively short,I am often the oldest and there are a lot of hot girls, once I was a bit surprised to see a young Muslim girl in hijab.

I haven't been but I think Boots at Liverpool Street station(run by Barts NHS) runs the quick service you are looking for.

Yeah I just use a mail order service it's free & much more convenient. Still that should be more widely available.

Yeah I don't doubt that but for me it's usually a symptomless routine test that I take every few months and I don't like having to take a whole day off just to do it.

I went to one today! Business as usual there, watching a woman in her 50s kicking off about who knows what and being removed by security kept me amused in the waiting room

Went to my local Gum clinic yesterday, for a walk-in appointment. Everything running as per normal. In and out in 45 mins.
