(1) About 40 years. (2) Some aspects of punting are better than they were in the early eighties: you can now have a much better idea of what you are going to get and mobile phones are pretty helpful  . I started off punting in London and then carried on in Berkshire when I moved here in the late eighties. The London experience at that time, based on local newspapers, ads in phone boxes or Soho walk-ups was very chancy. I think the heyday for me was the mid-to-late nineties when useful Internet resources started to become available and there were a lot of independents operating from nice private properties in Berkshire. Things seemed to tail off in Berkshire, likely due to increased property prices in the rural areas and police crackdowns in towns. Things looked up in London a few years after the millennium, when I started to work in London on odd days. Now, I think finding punts that suit me is quite a bit more difficult, but that's largely because (a) I prefer to see women who are not too much younger than me - and so lots of my favourites have retired and (b) the pandemic has caused a lot of WGs in the areas I frequent to call it a day. (3) Best ever? I'm not finished yet! More seriously, I have had lots of great experiences and quite a few mediocre or dire ones, but the great ones were good for a range of reasons: my preference has always been for a GFE and I don't rank my girl-friends (paid for or civvies) in a league table.
