Author Topic: The protection and extension of sexual freedoms - a punter's perception  (Read 884 times)

Was trawling through "The Gaurdian" and found this very interesting profile of Myles Jackman, the lawyer who defended a gentleman arrested for the possession of supposedly obscene pornography.  The case became known as the Tiger Porn case.  Below is the link,

I found it very interesting that lawyers such as Jackman exist and that they are actively protecting our sexual freedoms and that this goes beyond our right to consume pornography but also the freedom of sexual association.  His views on sexual freedoms also includes the decriminalisation of prostitution and the rights of sex workers, which is important particularly as the Swedish model has already been adopted within the UK (Northern Ireland).

Jackman is actively raising money through a crowdfunding platform, so that he may be able to pursue the protection and extension of the aforementioned freedoms which are very relevant to us as punters, as we consume pornography, have our kinks and purchase various types of services from WG's.  Jackman's work can only be good for us.  Below is a link to his crowdfunding initiative that also sets out his legal "goals",

The advocacy of punters' rights is limited by the majority of punters' desire for anonymity, as well as the fact that existing advocacy groups and mainstream political parties perceive punters in a negative light.  Don’t you thus think that supporting such crowd funded initiatives benefits us punters?

Escort Lauralee from glasgow is also working on this case. I follow what is happening in Canada where the Swedish model has been adopted. Apparently the main impact is on street prostitution. After an initial downturn in business because of nervous clients and newbies, it has had nearly zero impact on incall business. Unless its a whorehouse with guys hanging round there is little evidence to prove money has been exchanged especially if its a private apt or home.

I think most of us on here favour the incall or outcall to a hotel so while legal stuff is annoying, if it does happen I cannot see a huge impact. What we do the police couldn't really give a shit about. Its the traffickers and pimps who are targetted...

I could be naive though I'll add as a caveat.

Yes, police are humans they will use the law to settle scores, even if no prosecution the investigation wreaks their revenge.

The problem with laws that are on the books is that they can be enforced.  Currently many Chief Constbles look the other way as it is not a priority.

However the next government, may for what ever reason, decide that these laws need to be enforced.  Thus it is best to try and have these archaic laws removed or updated to better reflect the current reality.

couldnt agree more and if you read the 2013 bedford case in canada that is exactly what was achieved. However it was replaced with bill c36 that was even more draconian.

the view in canada is maybe they shd have left well alone, which is also the view of some WGs i have seen here.

case of be careful what you wish for....

A very valid point in terms of being careful what one wishes for.  I know that the EU as a body thinks that the Swedish model is a good idea, so it will only be a matter of time before the "diktat" arrives.

100% agree. My only comment is that C36 has merely cleaned up the streets. They say incalls at private addresses is bigger now in Sweden than it ever was. But statistics are impossible to come by because escort-police relationships are at zero and no prossie will risk her client base by talking to the media or pollsters.

The Swedish model is literally having the opposite affect than was intended.....until there are true working girl rights and benefits it will never be sorted.

As a highly rated WG said to me recently, prostitution ain't going away any time soon.

Got this email from his Patreon campaign today, which I subscribed to when this was originally posted:

Happy New Year! Thank you so much for your continued financial support, without which I would not have been able to provide so much support, activism and advocacy for our varied communities.

It is with extreme pride that I can announce that ATVOD (the internet regulator and censor of video on demand) ceased to exist as of the 1st of January 2016 - with Ofcom bringing regulation in-house.

This is a major victory against the persecution and censorship of sexual minorities. It would not have been possible without the resistance effort mounted by Backlash and individuals like Ms Tytania, Pandora Blake, Mistress R’eal and others; as well as Charlotte Rose for brining mainstream attention to the issue with the “Facesitting” Porn Protest in Parliament Square.

Thank you all for your valuable contribution to this enormous success!

Along with that victory I have also been using your financial support to fund my pro bono legal practice: reporting harassment against sex-workers to the police; reporting allegations of sexual violence against members of the BDSM scene to the police; advising and representing obscenity and protest defendants in the UK; advising obscenity cases in international jurisdictions; presenting talks and discussions for interested organisations (I have already accepted to speak in Welshpool, Edinburgh and Manchester this year); and am currently arranging drop in legal clinics for sex-workers (via the English Collective of Prostitutes), the LGBTQ community (via Dean Street); and the BDSM community (via Coffee Cake and Kisses).

So please feel free to spread the word and encourage engagement, education and outreach.

If a future government decides to look again at the Nordic Model, this is the guy who will be leading against the fight against it, given that fact he's an actual lawyer rather than just a campaigner.   I'd encourage anyone who has an interest in punting remaining legal to take a look at the link. Definitely worth a few quid a month in my opinion.
