Author Topic: Porn Age Verification Delayed  (Read 1967 times)

Offline S.X. MacHine

Yet again, the Government's virtue signalling proposals to partially censor internet porn have been put on hold. This time, till Christmas.
The reason? Apparently someone in the Civil Service forgot to inform our rulers at the EU in Brussels.
Remember. You read it here first; on UKP.

Haven't followed it too closely, but there seems to have been a lot of can kicking with this.

So nonsense thing that is impossible to deliver delayed

Well, they will deliver something; a scheme which will inconvenience dirty old men like myself, while being easily circumvented by tech savvy teens, who may very well end up trawling the dark web.

Boris will knock it on the head I reckon. Man in charge should hopefully see less of this type of bollocks.

Offline Trex

I hope they will scrap the whole thing, It's been delayed twice already.

Offline cultvoid

I'm disappointed. I've shelled out for 3 years of a VPN and until they bring in this brilliant, inspired piece of legislation I'm technically wasting my money.

I can't wait until it happens. Hopefully riots in the streets.

All for the children of course.  :manhater:

It was David Cameron who was responsible for this. Mind you, calling him a "man" is stretching the definition.

I doubt Theresa May even knows what the word porn means.

More likely they were told by a Minister not to bother as we would be out of the EU.

It all seems pointless to me. Tech savvy kids are bound to Fonda way around it

Unfortunately the measure is now on the statute book, so it's law and it would require a new bill to be passed in order to repeal it. Only the implementation has been delayed.
Labour are dead keen on it, as are the Tories, so I fear we are saddled with this for good.

'Porn block' companies seek £3m in damages.

I would put money on the government response being that the companies that created the checking services are still free to sell their solution to those who want to implement the blocks voluntarily.

According to that BBC item, it's been scrapped entirely.

Scrapped or delayed, I can see why the companies - who were almost certainly pushed privately by ministers to get a system in place in time for the deadline - are demanding recompense. I don't think they should receive the compo. Companies need to get used to lying governments, just like us plebs have.

An update on the Porn Age Verification system from a week ago, which likely got lost in all the US election and Covid coverage on TV.

Ms Morgan said the government would not be "commencing Part 3 of the Digital Economy Act 2017 concerning age verification for online pornography".

Instead, she said, porn providers would be expected to meet a new "duty of care" to improve online safety. This will be policed by a new online regulator "with strong enforcement powers to deal with non-compliance".

"This course of action will give the regulator discretion on the most effective means for companies to meet their duty of care," she added.

Thanks for the link and info. IMO its now as it should be, its the companies who choose to show such content that could get fucked not forcing adults to age verify.

The verification companies are fuming about this massive U-turn, good I hope if this idea gets mooted again they will remember what happened here and tell the government to get stuffed. No doubt this whole fiasco has cost multi millions of our taxes.   Fucking meddling nanny state, I have to age verify with my ISP to view 18+ sites that's my part of it done in my book.

My son took all of about 10 minutes to totally circumvent the parental control software - and then establish those same controls on my laptop. He took great pleasure from the challenge (as soon as I realised I was blocked, he deactivated it all). That was c. £50 down the drain. I know he watches porn, so rather than try the futile efforts of blocking it, I try and educate him about the reality and fictional side of it (for want of a better term), and the kinks that some people will do and enjoy (at an appropriate level, of course). Governments should be more focused on ensuring parents have the understanding and tools to educate and moderate their kids rather than stop them from any experiencing any possible "danger" they may come across..

Unless sites implement these verification controls for all visitors and not just the region garnered by your IP address, a quick, cheap way around it, as cultvoid said, is VPN (though I notice that UKP can identifty and block connections from common VPNs). Of course, there is the dark web, as well. And, which website based outside the UK/EU is going to block you.. I am sure most of the ones that I get onto are not in the UK.

But seriously, Mr D, :hi: to you for trying to educate the lad to the lack of realism in many - most? - porn films.
