Doctor has asked me to ha e a blood test for a condition I have.

How long does viagra stay in the bloodstream?

Should I give it 48 hours or longer between pill and test?

Any views / ideas?

Thanks

Oscar

They say you can have one Viagra a day,  so I take it it stays in your system for about 24 hours. :hi:

With blood tests they test for things that the GP specifies. So for example if it’s a problem with your liver then they will do specific tests on your blood relating to the liver and linked conditions. They won’t necessarily test for anything else because (one) there are hundreds of conditions that they can test for and it would take too long and (two) there’s a cost implication and in the main GP’s are tight and won’t spend more than they have to.

Of course if your test does come back as positive for Viagra then your GP Might prescribe it anyway!

Probably be better to ask an expert that question, like your doctor, a nurse, pharmacist etc

Wouldn't worry about it pal, doctor is looking for something else not how much Viagra you've got in your system, and even it did show up on a blood test, it's not a banned drug is it, he's probably prescribed it himself dozens of times  :D

Blood tests are looking for something specific, nobody will detect Viagra unless they're intentionally hunting for it.
Compared to many other drugs, Viagra is quite short lived. Average human half-life is 3 hours i.e. 50% of drug is gone in 3 hours and by 12 hours only 6% is left. This is one reason why other ED drugs are popular e.g. Cialis has a half-life of nearly a day.

Even though, blood tests, tend to be for specific things, sometimes what you do or take prior the test, can lead to a negative positive or positive negative outcome. For example, you’re  advised not to have sex or engage in strenuous exercise 48 hours before a PSA  blood test, as this can lead to a false positive outcome. Like I said before, talk to an expert. Nobody on here, knows what blood test you’re  having and if Viagra can impact that test.

This is all true but I think the OP is asking the wrong question. My feeling is that Viagra is unlikely to skew a blood test, and of course the doctor is unlikely to test for viagra; but it might, according to some studies, have a mild effect on glucose levels (for the better I think it was). So if it masks a slightly elevated glucose level it would give the doctor false information.

It’s not a simple pharmacy question (as our resident idiot suggested). But if it does affect your glucose levels, irrespective of the drug’s own metabolism, it’s a waste of a blood test. It’s also quite possible that your doctor will not have been expected to read up on whether it does.

Suggestion one: be honest with your doctor. It’s sensible to tell your doctor if you take viagra occasionally even if you buy it privately. He won’t be shocked.

Suggestion two: avoid any of your non-prescribed drugs for the period before your blood test. (Obviously tadalafil/cialis would be a longer window as it is directly in your system for longer). Depending on what it’s for, you may be told to fast for 12 hours beforehand anyway.

FFS. Tell your doctor you're taking Viagra (etc.). They have heard it all before and won't be judgemental; they don't know if you are taking it within a relationship or otherwise. There are many other drugs and treatments that you can't have with Viagra (and vice versa), so your doctor needs to know. Please don't make something minor worse through embarassment.

If something is going to affect the results of a medical test of some sort, then you will either be told to abstain beforehand, or asked exactly what you are taking.

The blood test will most defini=tely not be affected by Viagra; and they will only test for a limited number oif items. They will not test for and would not even care if you arevtaking viagra. I work in an NHS lab so can confirm you have no need to worry.
