For those of you who use an iphone and have macs at home just be careful that on the mac there is the imessage app that somehow just "syncs" with the messages on ur phone. And even if u had deleted it on ur phone sometimes it just syncs at certain times and leaves texts on the computer too!! I recently discovered this and almost had a heart attack haha

Apologies if everyone knows this but just thought ill put it out there in case. Covering tracks and all that.

Online Jonestown

Yes, you need to turn off iMessanger on the IPad or mac computer.

Offline mrwhite

Bit late, iMessage was on iOS in 2011, and became part of OSX Mountain Lion in 2012!

don't forget iPads, and Apple watch, and there was even talk Apple TV would get iMessage functionality one day.

It's a good reminder though, but a lot of the WGs I know with iOS devices turn iMessage off to prevent embarrassment for their clients by having messages pop up where they shouldn't

Also, if you have Fine My IPhone turned on and your significant other knows your Apple ID and password she can see exactly where you are at any given moment.

Offline Mountain Goat

There is also the hand off function that means your iPhone/ipad and Mac all sync with one another when in bluetooth range and share things like internet history.
I was very nearly caught out with this one, having used my iPhone for looking at AW while away with work, when I came home I couldn't work out for a heart stopping moment why our family Mac had my iPhone search history. All of that functionality now disabled.
I disable all location settings on my iPhone too.

Offline buccdriver

A basic phone for calls and texts doesn't complicate a punting life. Now where have I read that before..........

Offline Horizontal pleasures

When I got my first ever iPhone a few months ago - having used Mac computers since 1987 - when my phone rang so did my computer. Aarrgghh. I fixed it with help.

Simple rule, should be added to the punting wiki if it's not there already, if you use an iPhone for punting just register it with a different Apple account. That way your other Apple devices won't get iMessages, FaceTime calls etc.

I assume you realise that if you have a significant other, that a separate phone for punting is a must?

Offline Bikerboy

Yes these IOS customer features are a pain in the arse if you don't realise they are switched on and don't want to be tracked/stuff replicated MI5 style.

Offline Marmalade

If you have an o/h watching you and sniffing your gear you are in a different game altogether

The short answer to this is don't buy Mac products, phones or computers. For 20 years i was an avid Mac fan and user but not any more for a host of reasons. Windows PC and a Samsung phone and you'll get none of this crap.

I guess I'm the paranoid sort, despite (or maybe because of) working in IT.
My feature phone does all I want.. No apps - but then, I have no need to see pics of mates dinners or to know exactly where the fucking International Space Station is.
An even simpler punting phone (Nokia 108).
My home computers all run Linux, and 99% of the time I'm online its via a 'live' (ram only) distro.

To really get my conspiracy theorist hat on:  Maybe Apple deliberately take a big steaming shit in the middle of their customers privacy? Maybe its company policy to rapidly erode what the public sense of 'normal' levels of privacy are?

You'll be teaming up with Stapler soon

But seriously... most people couldn't run Linux if it chased them out of the bedroom cupboard. I salute you for a great choice -- but great for you if a bit impractical for most folk.

You can avoid all these by using an old and cheap PAYG phone. Smart phones do not make great punting phones.

The best approach is to understand the tech you are using and keep it separate from your general use/family kit.

A smartphone of any type is useful for punting and SA activities, just don't use your main phone and don't sign into any of your real life accounts on it. Embrace the technology.

add to the list sharing your location on google maps.

iPhones keep history of where you have been and look for "Frequent Locations". I turned it off on mine a few years back. I would be surpirsed if Android phones didn't do the same...

You're living in the dark ages

WhatsApp pics are less likely to be shopped
And you can see when whichever burd it is, has logged on
Some of em like doing WA - coz its free

You can access AW while out & about
Handy to find a burd if you've got the horn
Or to find a plan B, C or D

Smart phones do not make great punting phones.

I've still got the punting nokia.  Any self respecting punter needs to have had one of these

If punters ain't keen on smartphones for punting then best they leave em well alone
Don't want them fretting

I would suggest that if your normal phone is an iPhone then get an android for punting
iPhones have a nasty habit of connecting with things around them - as mentioned above

Linux has come a long way since I first started using it back in the nineties. Then it heavily relied on being able to use the command line. Nowadays it's almost totally Graphical user interface.

Installing now is a breeze compared to back then and of course if you don't want to install it you can run it as a live distro using a DVD or off a USB stick.

A typical Windows user if sat down in front of a popular Linux distribution would in a very short time find their way around.

That all said, these days I've mainly gone over to Apple.  :)

You might want to turn off Location Services on your iPhone too.  It remembers the locations that you've travelled to and if you have a regular, it will pop up and could be quite embarrassing and/or a problem.

Just looked at my frequent locations. Fascinating. All perfectly legit and explainable with very dull and unexciting reasons. Because I have taken the time to understand how the technology works and therefore know how to use it with out it catching me out.

Basic Nokia for all the technophobes

There was a lass on the radio yesterday talking about having a chip inserted just under the skin in her hand which could be used to do things. All programmable so the action is fully customisable. She demoed sending a Tweet from her phone by putting her hand near the device, but it could have been anything. Say paying for goods without her card, or unlocking her car and starting it without the need for a separate key. Imagine honking on an escorts tits, or fingering her arse, and your other half being able to check on her computer where your fingers have been!!!

If the OH asks why location on your mobile is turned off the simple answer is that this burns the battery life.  Coz it does

About 10 years ago they said this sort of skin-implanted technology would be commonplace in 2015. Some things are best not invented.

but how do you use WAZE if location is off?

Offline webpunter

Leave location on until close to destination then turn it off
Waze does show some history - like maps on iPhones / android etc

Or put Waze on punting smartphone.  Just make sure its charged up before heading out

Yep, separate punting smartphone, using different account, location off on your main smartphone\tablet\location aware device if going out of your explainable area.

Hint for Apple users, you can turn off the share my location feature independently of the wider location services. That way you can't be tracked from other devices but your maps etc still work.

Indeed, good advice.
These sometimes unwanted 'customer enhancements' (read Apple revenue streams) point to a broader issue which Tech geeks will decry; Techies employed to develop apps need to fill thier time with something and developing apps with niche appeal often with user agreement embedded in the 100 page T&C's (you know the ones none of us have time to read) and needing minor programming skills to discover and selectively disable are increasingly common, irritatingly so as far as some users are concerned. Geeky types love them of course, well they would wouldn't they.

Here's another I personally find a waste of space. On by default, just needs to be switched off (Mac and iPhone).

Also switch off "Access from lock screen" ( under 'Notifications')

Nothing wrong with fancy phones ... as long as the user learns how to use them!
