Punting before the internet & mobiles

Thinking back to my early days of punting before the internet and mobile phones, the ways and means we used to get a punt. A card in a phone box, the personals local rag, contact mags whatever. I used to be a service driver for Nation Express doing the Brighton run every weekend. With time to kill in Brighton before the return journey, got one of my best punts via Fridayads. If I remember rightly, mobile phones were new, but internet had not got off the ground then. Made her my monthly treat!! too expensive for weekly on coach drivers wages.

So guys, how did you go about punting before the wonders of technology?

+1 but the local newspaper not the Daily Sport.  Totall random - the true definition of a "punt" - absolutely no picture, very limited description as they paid by the word to advertise.  In hindsight I actually was quite lucky the few times I had to to do things the old fashioned way.  I do sometimes have to chuckle at the guys here bitching about how "awful" AW is!

Local rags where I was were crap, piss poor selection and parlors were a mixed bag that I avoided most of the time. That left the streets and when you've street punted AW for all its failings seems very attractive.

I remember punting in the 90's often just going to the phone box with a few numbers scribbled down from nottingham evening post. It was a real lottery - you never knew what you were likely to find at the other end. Thinking back I punted in some terrible shit holes with girls I would never have given a second look to in a club.

Mainly adverts in the East London Advertiser, you were punting blind ----------------------- but you still are now with many of the headless photos on Adultwork.

The internet should have put an end to punting blind ---------------- it hasn't.

It started with Classified section of The South Wales Echo in the late 80s for me, always chancy on what they would look like, I learnt early to add a few years and at least one dress size to their description over the phone , I did walk on a few occasions.

Then moved on to parlours and enjoyed seeing the line up, I learnt there to listen to their names when they introduced themselves and repeat them back. When I had chosen and was taken to the room to to prepare myself I would write down the names of the ones I fancied and then ring before going if I could find bloody phone box working and change to use it. It is so much easier now.

I then started travelling upto the Midlands to work and discovered Jezebal Magazine! Pictures and numbers a revelation.

I can't remember her name but use to visit a woman just off the Stourbridge Road out of Lye who I contacted through Jezabel she worked out of a maisonette in Pebble Close. Many a time I would travel back to Cardiff with a smug grin having just visited her.

I agree and years ago I was guilty of just that.     

I turned up once at a flat to find it was a filthy squat and the girl was a skinny little slapper ----------- I didn't walk.

Happened to pass a massage parlour in E17 when visiting the area with family, aged about 20. Location logged in brain, checked it out at a later date for first  punt.  Mummy n daddy never found out needless to say!
Next was a parlour in E15 as seen in a porn mag, better shags there, it's a diffferent and worse place now.

Yep, it was hit and miss then and its hit and miss now.
The diference is the WG lies and half truths are on the web and not in phone boxes and mags.

            Maybe only punts with girls with a lot of good reviews on here ? But yes i wish i could get my hit rate up to 22/23 or even 50/50 .

            As for OP before the net it was local newspaper , even more hit or miss then AW but i did learn to walk away at this time and still do.

I must be doing something right as I'm up in that neighbourhood of success rates - I do look for specific things in a profile so even before I was on UKP three out of my first four punts were good.  Then I got a Romanian b&s - despite there being good AW feedback, so I went searching to see if there was a better source for punting intel and came here. 

My success rate since has been outstanding.  Any hint of negative/neutral feedback here and a WG is off my hotlist, and apart from one recent occasion I literally don't bother meeting someone if there's no feedback here at all. 

All I can say is - do lots of research before taking a punt!  Ultimately I am lucky enough to work from home and have lots of quiet time to do the research, appreciate many people don't have the hours to spend that I do - but it does pay off.

My requirements are not hugely different, except geographical area.
I still hold out little hope of finding decent WGs.
Oh, and a phone number would be good.

Yep, that sounds about the level of service to expect pre internet and now.

To return to the OP's question, I started out in the very early 80's with a couple of street girls in Argyll Sq (I think?) and then graduated to phoning numbers from cards in newsagents' windows. Completely blind, but some good results - I remember a very good French flat in Orange St, near the National Gallery. Lots of girls round Gloucester Terrace and Paddington.

Later I started to work in Soho, which continued for nearly 20 years, so the walk-ups became my punting domain. Again pretty much blind until you got to know some of the regular girls but very high turnover. Some surprisingly good girls worked in the walk-ups, but they were a bit grim and not at all discreet. Sitting waiting in the kitchen for the girl could be a dispiriting experience.......

 A bit later, Les Girls and Soho Cottage came on the scene with a regular rota of girls, so that if you saw a girl you liked, she would be there on set days of the week. Well-run places in their day, and a pity they couldn't survive. The best girls in those establishments, such as Paige at Les Girls, were the best available in those days.

 Of course it was different - only OW and absolutely no kissing. The only uncovered oral regularly available back then in Soho or Shepherd Market was at the French flats in Dean St, close to Soho Sq - Lily and Josette. Anal was as rare as rocking horse shit - Jackie, first of Lisle St, then Peter St, last seen in Shepherd Market was a pioneer of that dark art, and very good too.

AW did change everything and PN at one point was excellent, but obviously both have deteriorated (esp PN) to the point where they are getting on for fucked-up useless. AW now is ONLY of any use a locator, IF you have a good bullshit detector and time. Plus the excellent resources of this site.

My main method were personal ads in my local newspapers, cards in newsagents windows, phone box cards in more central London areas and direct and indirect contact mags for which i had an accomadation address for many years to pick my mail up from, and to pick some my porn up from.

One problem i sometimes had was finding a phone box that worked or didnt have piss or even shit in it on ocassion.
