Pompeii: the new dig on BBC2 - it's amazing the stuff they're finding and it's so easy to excavate.
It really is.
It's moving somehow looking at how much survives of a society that lived 2000 years ago, and the sophistication and artistry of those people, revealed as new discoveries are unearthed.

I also saw the new Roadhouse. I kind of enjoyed it. I can't fully remember the original with Patrick Swaze, I haven't seen it in over 3 decades as around that time I was more of a Jackie Chan, Van damme, Jet Li fan when it came to fight movies but I have to say, eventhough a little cartoony, I enjoyed Conor Mcgeggors acting.
I stuck with it until that first cartoon fight between Jake Gyllenhaal and the group in the bar, and then after thrashing them, drives them to the hospital.
I didn't stick around for Conor McGregor.

Mammoth on iPlayer - disappointing

Also on BBC2, watched the first episode.  The biggest load of shite I've watched in a long time. So called "comedy" about a PE teacher who gets caught in an avalanche in the 1970's and  gets frozen only to wake up in modern times who returns to his old job as a teacher. Probably one of the worst so called comedy's I've ever seen. It must have been written by a seven year old.

Cheers for brief, was thinking of giving it a go. Won’t bother now.

I was hoping it would be good, but sadly not. The second episode wasn't much better. They tried to make the starting credits be a bit like a 1970s series. It could have been a lot better. They're doing all the obvious smoking, sexism stuff that was rife in the 1970s including him trying to hit on all the women at the parents evening.

I’ve mentioned it before but I’ll mention it again cos I’m watching it as I write…..
Mash…. Superb tv show. Well written with great characters you care about. Often funny and tear jerking in the same episode. They don’t make em like this anymore. I really can’t praise it enough. Avoid the episodes shown on sky as they have the canned laughter and seek out the dvds where you can switch that off.

The Loved Ones (2009). There have been some delightfully demented Australian horror films over the years, The Loved Ones is definitely up there with the best of them. Girl asks boy to take her to the school prom, boy rejects her and ends up in a bloody mess, literally. Wild, witty and best of all genuinely horrifying in a non Hollywood way if you get my drift.  B+

Lost Girls (2020). A mother searches for her missing daughter in this drama mystery based on real life events. Sincere and compassionate filmmaking from director Liz Garbus, Amy Ryan is quite magnificent in the lead role.  A-

Something someone pointed out to me. The original Predator movie, the end credits, you can play the theme tune to ANY 80s sit com / tv show to it and it FITS but fits perfectly. Beverly Hill 90210 theme; perfect match, different stroke, fits perfect.

Just rewatched WELCOME TO THE PUNCH. A solid 9/10.

I may be wrong but I think that all comedy shows at the time came with a laugh track. MASH's creative team pushed back against it, they weren't completely successful but there were no added laughs in scenes set in the Operating Theatre.

I've seen the odd episode over the years. I liked Katey Sagal as the wife Peggy, a good comedic actress. As you say couldn't be made now, too many sensitive snowflakes would be frothing at the mouth.

They were partly successful. Some episodes were without that laugh track fully if it was a serious episode. And the stateside broadcasts were with the laugh track. Here they were shown without the track all the time. I remember when bbc2 aired a laugh track episode in error and there was uproar. Thankfully the dvd box set you can choose to switch it off.

Mash was superb. Perhaps Alan Alda stood out as the moral centre of the series, but the entire cast was great.
And while it was often very funny (who can forget Klinger), I can remember watching it 50 years ago as a youngster and realising it wasn't just about humour, but also had something serious to say about the spectrum of human nature, both good and bad, and sometimes in extremis.

The Korean war only lasted 3 years whereas M*A*S*H  TV series ran for 11 years  and is still being shown on television today. Hard to imagine a comedy about a tragic event like the Korean war would have been so successful.

I was just thinking, did Allo Allo (or Dad's army) ever have a serious message in any episodes? I cant think that they did.
Blackadder goes Forth obviously did on the last episode and generally portraying the disregard the higher command had for the frontline.

Absolutely agree. Hawkeye was also the beacon of quick wit and sarcasm.Klinger the king of the schemes and his cross dressing tastes hilarious just to get discharged as insane.
As you say the whole cast was superb. As well as having plenty to say on the futility of war which was squarely aimed at the Vietnam conflict. It wasn’t offensive with its humour and unlike today’s so called comedy dramas didn’t have a huge team of writers. Often written by just a couple of people.

That to me shows that its humour and morality is still very relevant today.

Worth remembering that the 1972 TV series was a spin off from the award winning !970 Robert Altman movie of the same name starring Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould; which was in turn taken from the 1968 novel of the same name by Robert Hooker.

I'm about 4 episodes in and enjoying it so far. Only reason I've not finished it yet is watching the show made me start playing Fallout 4 again, so my time has been invested in that  :D

From what I've seen so far they've captured the humour and world brilliantly. The weird Vaults with their social experiments are a massive part of the game, so the "exchange" in the first episode was interesting.

Think Lost with the bunker and entering the code if you've not watched Fallout yet

On Channel ID, Investigation Discovery, there a program called Undercover Underage, which deals with child predators in the USA

Documentary definitely worth watching, undercover operations done by hunter groups, but unlike in the UK, these groups have the backing of the FBI.  There even a FBI consultant that advise them, on how to proceed

Film Capricorn One shown on Legend TV channel last night. A decent film telling the story of a faked Mars mission landing that goes wrong. Stars Elliot Gould as a reporter trying to uncover the truth and starring a certain OJ Simpson (who's been in the news recently after his passing) as one of the astronauts. The Consequences Of Love (2004). A lonely middle aged man living in a Swiss hotel is not as innocent as he appears to be. My Name. Korean action crime drama about a young female who is trying to find out who murdered her gangster Father. It’s on Netflix. 3 episodes in and I’m finding it really good. The lead actress is excellent. Takes some punishment and kicks ass.

Finally got round to this.....
Not bad, has its moments. Brutal and bloody fight scenes at times.
It had a good tempo over the episodes and evolved into a reasonable storyline and twist.
Thanks for the recommendation.   :hi:
