Thailand is dead in the water now! Even if they reduce the prison time to 7 days (who seriously wants to fly all the way to Thailand only to be locked up for 7 days before venturing out!!) The bars have opened although after hearing from ex pats in the main resorts many of the usual haunts are being reclaimed by the Thai authorities. Something to do with a license being needed at any venue - They are all being revoked! That is for the bars and clubs which have survived. I have loved my encounters and partying in Thailand over the last 10 years but even me the eternal optimist can clearly see now Thailand will never be the Thailand we knew again.

Pattaya and the other resorts will eventually bounce back, it’s just a matter of when, I would not speculate when the country will end restrictions, if I had to guess I would say October.

My advice to get accurate up to date information is to watch the latest You-Tube videos, things change by the day.

Do you really want to go through all this crap & expense ?
Taken from Lancashire Evening Post 15/03.2021.
[23:50, 15/03/2021] Andrew Neale has spent nearly two weeks in quarantine in Frankfurt where he learned he had tested positive for Covid whilst on a lay over from Bangkok to Manchester on March 2.  In a tragic twist, the 35-year-old had been flying home to attend the funeral of his dad - Preston bus driver Clive Neale - who died from Covid February 27.
As per UK regulations, Andrew was required to take a quick PCR test at Frankfurt Airport at a cost of €275 (£236), before boarding his flight to the UK.   But he said he had none of the known symptoms and was confident that in a few hours he would be home with his grieving family in Preston.
But just moments before boarding, Andrew's phoned pinged with his test result. He was 'devastated' to learn that he had tested positive for Covid-19.
"I called my sister and we both burst into tears realising I'd miss my dad's funeral," he said.  "I learnt that I was positive by an automated email as I was about to board the plane to Manchester. Because I was already past the check-in desks, I could have easily boarded the Manchester plane like normal.   "But obviously, I couldn't allow myself to do that. Instead, I went to the police and told them the situation. They seemed to have no idea what to do with me, so I sat on a bench for more than six hours, just waiting.
"Eventually, they said I'd need to stay at a quarantine hotel for 15 days - costing 170 euros per night. I couldn't believe it.
"Then they said there would be a separate fee for food and I would need to pay another 275 euros for the second Covid test in two weeks. I was devastated."
He was detained by three police officers in full protective suits before being escorted out of the airport and placed in a taxi that took him to his 'quarantine hotel', where he has spent the past two weeks cooped up at a cost of £146 per night.

[23:52, 15/03/2021] Stranded and alone in Frankfurt, Andrew said he was frantic at the thought of missing his dad's funeral and how he was going to pay for his two week stay in quarantine.
But his family assured him that last-minute arrangements had been made to postpone his dad's funeral, whilst his friends in Preston rallied together to raise money to cover some of the costs.
He will take another Covid test on Tuesday (March 16) and if he tests negative, he will finally be allowed to board a flight home to Manchester.
"That's the situation I'm in now. If tomorrow's result is negative, I’ll need to buy another ticket to England but at least I'll be on my way home.

Thanks for that link, really interesting. I can think of worse internment camps than Phuket for a week before being let loose.

I think it says that Pattaya will open up as a 'quarantine area' as well. This would be amazing and I'll try to get out asap.

I have been dreaming of going back and picking up young girls for £40. Hopefully Pattaya bounces back and the girls return quickly

Offline HeadChef

I want to go back to Pattaya too. But I see that Bangkok is not on the list for opening up in October.  Normally you have to fly into BKK before moving onto Pattaya. Any clues how that might work?

Once you have spent seven days in one of the six approved destinations you are free to travel anywhere in Thailand.  The seven days aren't quarantine but the article I read said you will have to prove your whereabouts (could be an app) and there may be testing as well during the seven days. But before you are allowed into Thailand at all there are other requirements... which aren't yet finalised but will include proof of full vacination (format not known) and maybe other things like certificate you are healthy, covid travel insurance and maybe more or less. The government have not yet approved this and I read just now that the prime minister is in favour but there is still a lot of discussion about the detail. It's also dependent on 70% of the Phuket population being vaccinated for the July opening and I assume that the same will probably be true for the other areas suggested to be opening in October. So, sounds like progress... and I will certainly be hoping to playing in Patong sometime in August for a week and then...

There are a couple of other gotachas. Thailand currently has a list of approved airlines you can use. Also you can't fly back to the UK with a connection in a red list country without spending time in hotel quarantine when you get back to the UK. Most of the middle east is red list so connections through Doha etc won't be much use. Finally, its not clear if you will be able to fly to Bangkok for a connection to one of the six destinations. My plan is to fly Singapore airlines since you can fly London - Singapore - Phuket.

I have started to look at accommodation in Patong and some of it is good value. I found a couple of websites talking about guest friendly hotels with links. But I don't know if this is just an attempt to earn commissiion. Although I have stayed in a variety of places in Thailand (Bangkok/Chiang Mai/Pattaya/Hua Hin) I have never had any problem bringing guests back. But I have only stayed in Patong once before and didn't have a problem with guests so I would be interested in your experiences.

I'm also thinking of getting an O/A (aka retirement) Visa on the basis that I'm an old git and it would allow me multiple entries to Thailand and allow me to stay for a year and is renewable year to year. I know about the requirements for this Visa.  However if anyone has applied for one of these I would be interested in your experiences! Thank you.

"Five more tourist areas will reopen for arrivals by vaccinated tourists on 1 October: the mainland resort areas of Phangnga and Krabi, respectively north and east of Phuket; the island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand; the area around the popular resort of Pattaya, east of Bangkok; and the northern city of Chiang Mai" - quote from the Independent.

I still haven't found any info on how you can get to the areas like Pattaya that don't have airports! And also nothing to say if you can connect to other flights in Bangkok if you want to go the Chiang Mai for example.  But I have read that even if you meet all the requirements to be allowed in to Thailand you will have to quarantine for seven days for areas other than the agreed six. I guess this is wait and see.

My advice, don't book until the last minute, things change daily in Thailand, how do you prove that you have been vaccinated, will they accept the blue card that you get when having the jab, can't see it myself.  :unknown: :unknown:

Pattaya does have an airport; U-Tapao International Airport. Airport code: UTP. Pre-covid, Qatar flew there, but it was mostly used by budget airlines / short-haul flights.

I've got an apartment in Thailand. Does this change anything? Or is it still the usual quarantine for 14 days? If it gets reduced to 7 days I would tolerate it and go.

That's good info. Thanks. There are no international flights at the moment but there are regular daily internal flights. One is from Phuket. That will be handy after I have spent my seven days in Phuket in August.

Offline Auldbugger

I flew into U-Tapao once. Never again. Thought that it would save time in getting to Pattaya but there was only a couple of immigration officers on duty and so I was stuck in a queue for well over an hour in a non air-conditioned arrival hall. Luckily the Uber that I had booked had hung around but I was surprised at how far iit was from U-Tapao to Pattaya. The Uber took over an hour to get there and I arrived a frazzled mess!

There is a regular coach service from BKK SVB. Its only 2-3 hours to Pattaya.  There is a very slow train which you can catch at Lat Krabang but it doesnt run very frequently.  Cheap as chips! Actually much cheaper tham chips. 30-40 baht  :D

Have you had any problems owning a property in your own Farang name? I thought that non-residents couldn't own property outright in Thailand.

When/if Pattaya opens up as a 'quarantine area' (scheduled for Oct 2021 AFAIK) I think you can fly into BKK and take a pre-approved and pre-arranged transport to Pattaya (minibus I guess).

As far as i'm aware you can own a condo or an apartment but not land or a house if you are a farrang , you need a Thai spouse to buy the land or house for you and a few years later watch her take the lot .

Apartments are fine as you don’t own the ‘land’. In any complex they allow 50% foreign ownership. There are still ways to buy land and a house (I know loads that do), it’s a bit riskier though because if laws change you could end up shafted.

You’ll struggle to take hookers back to that hotel, think they actually charge 1000 baht to bring a guest to your room for the night.

It wouldn’t be my choice, a lovely hotel in an ideal location but too expensive for a mongering vacation.

I use Tui for Europe but for Thailand I prefer to make my own plans rather than buy a package.

Flying into Pattaya airport is no great incentive, a taxi from Bangkok airport is only around £25 if you pre-book and takes around 90 minutes.

Reported Thursday 1 April 2021.

Tanee Sangrat, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that travellers — Thais and non-Thais — are no longer required to have fit-to-fly documents issued by Thai consulates from Thursday. Foreigners, however, still have to show a negative COVID-19 test result.

He said that people who are certified to have been vaccinated will be allowed to spend seven days in special quarantine hotels, compared to the previous 14 days. Unvaccinated people have to spend 10 days in quarantine unless they arrive from one of 11 countries — all in sub-Saharan Africa — in which case they have to do the full two weeks.

He said that those vaccinated must have certificates approved by Thai FDA and/or the World Health Organization. Thailand has approved seven vaccines including Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Moderna.

Thailand hopes to first fully reopen the island of Phuket, its most popular destination, by July 1 for vaccinated visitors without quarantine. But they will be required to spend a certain time, possibly up to a week, on Phuket before they are allowed to travel elsewhere in Thailand.

Pattaya still seems to be a ghost town with hardly any tourists of any sort. Some bars are open but the majority are still closed and no doubt will not reopen for some time, if ever. It’s an ill wind that doesn’t blow some good and I’ve never seen the empty beach look cleaner. Maybe the sea is swimable for the first time in years.

I saw this on Al Jazeera Newshour at lunchtime. They are restricting hours for markets, gyms, bars and restaurants after four straight days of record positive test results. The Prime Minister was shown at a press conference saying he didn't want a full lockdown as it would destroy most businesses. He may not have much choice if the rate keeps climbing. :timeout:

The Thais (but no tease)  have put together a website with current entry restrictions as of April 21st  including 7 day quarantine for fully vacinated tourists and other requirements such as covid-19 insurance.

However, even though entry restrictions have eased somewhat this may not be a good time to go. Yesterday they recorded over 2000 new infections, their highest ever single day total  and some hospitals are running out of intensive care beds.

I am still in contact with several ladies in Bangkok, one of them sent me the attached picture, 2070 new Covid cases is sad news.
The lady concerned, who is approaching 60 and is still gagging for it, has had her first Sinovac jab.

Thailand has started testing more, although outlying villages are passed over, the main towns are now being tested! Hence the climb in 'cases / infected' - test being used is the PCR test which will give false positive results which increase with cycle count. Simple - more test = more cases (many of which are false positive due to the nature of the PCR test which as the invertor of the test stated is not a diagnosis tool)! I think the year will be lost if they keep along these lines. Eventually UK will put Thailand on the red list.
