Author Topic: BEWARE MAP APPS AND LOCATION HISTORY - MY WIFE WENT CRAZY WHEN SHE FOUND IT  (Read 20748 times)

Offline whydoidothis

Not sure where to post this information but it could save your marriage or at the very least avoid getting caught out like I was!

Do you use Google maps? Sure you do - have to find these seedy establishments we visit, right?

I had made the mistake of leaving my google log in details for my email account which also covers Google Maps.

So what happens when you log into Google Maps and you come across this menu on the left and the item Timeline.

It shows where you have been every hour of every day for months, even years.

She came across this entry  Shanghai Massage - you will see the entry as per attachment

How could I explain what I was doing there?

Luckily I was able to say I visited the hairdressers next door and she believed me as I had a haircut that day - luckily.

However she went back into my Timeline and found other Massage Parlours which I could not explain away. Needless to say heated arguments followed and things are not the same at home to put it mildly.

So I have posted this as a warning to all fellow punters out there. Go into your Google maps timeline and if a massage shop is mentioned you can delete it or say I have not visited this place. Shows up as 3 dots next to entry.

Absolutely right but many never do. This is for those who don't

Shit, that's a bitch. Thanks for the heads up and a reminder to all to tidy up the breadcrumbs after you've dipped into the bakery.

I assume this is the app? I only use the web version on my phone.

I can only imagine the grief you're getting. The doubts in her mind. Telling her friends. Them all looking at you as if you're a paedo. Imagine if she finds this post. I hope you've gone through all your devices and accounts and cleansed the whole lot. And I guess your next review might be a while

Hope it works out, fella.

Don't worry, she'll get there in the end, once they are on your trail they never let up, I’d start planning for the inevitable now, get those funds stashed away somewhere safe where her solicitor can’t find them, cover your tracks. Good luck.

Thats what I did. Before I realised I could do that I always deleted the timeline history for any day I punted.

but.. some get suspicions when its turned off.. My wife checks my location as I do a few long distant runs so she checks to see if I am alive and sometimes checks if I am still at the shop etc.

I turn mine off, use an old satnav and I clear the history and yes to the punting phone or a cloud sim solution on your main phone.

Offline hogcatcher

This happened to me a few years back with my Note 3. It literally tracked every location.
Make sure to turn of location services!!!!

Having a punting phone is essential in my view, but if you have a domestic phone as well, that's the one OH will have access to. That needs to be location clean as well  :hi:

Offline Jack Flash

Use an incognito window in your browser for all your punting including planning journeys on google. By default your timeline location is off in incognito mode. That means you can still use Google Maps and the timeline feature in your main browser with your 'usual' email address.

I assume you have a separate email address for punting anyway. Any punting searches and logging in to porn websites should also be in 'incognito mode'. That way it will not appear in your usual Google search history.

Good luck in riding out this episode. Swear blind that it was a one-off and show her lots of attention over the next few weeks. I almost got caught out years ago when my wife discovered a bar receipt showing gin and tonic which I would never drink. I was at a conference hotel so explained that I had met a female colleague. Tightened up my security arrangements after that but you can never be too careful. Always check your clothing and car when coming back from a meet to make sure there are no bits of paper with the address or phone number etc. If you use a satnat make sure you can delete the history.

You are not too far wrong, but it does not always lead to the inevitable, sometimes coming clean to a certain extent can save the situation, did for me many times.

I'd agree with that. My Mrs doesn't have access to my phone and I don't have access to her two phones. No idea why she has two but there you go, must be for emergencies or summat.

I just can't believe people will go about carrying a machine that knows where they are.

You have all been brainwashed into compliance with big-brother.

I carry a mobile phone, I turn it on to call rescue if my car won't go.  Or I break my leg in the forest.

Otherwise I am unavailable.  This is called freedom and there is no price on it.

This is the answer to virtually every thread on here!  I often wonder if all these guys who hate being married and are trapped into this sneaking around and risk all lifestyle encourage their kids to get married?

After a punt goto your timeline and delete the punt location.
Or choose the nearest supermarket.

And remember if your the type to take pictures turn off backup orthey will sync to your Google account

Offline anyfucker

one more thing to remember is that when you fire up Google Maps it remembers the last place you were at and defaults to there.
As said above don't store timeline and bring up maps when back at work or near to home.

Offline Gordon Bennett

No disrespect but that's got little to do with Google Maps and more to do with sharing access to your Google account with your Mrs. Nobody can get  on my phone, tablet or PC and nobody can access my Gmail and other Google stuff.
I like Google Maps and you can edit it to either delete days (suspicious) or simply change your stop at Roxy's Salon to Rod's Snooker Hall. Alternatively, just disable it.
Hint: You need to delete you car SatNav destinations too if you share car with others.

Offline DoctorSalchicha

That's why you need to get used to use incognito mode if you need to browse on your tablet, laptop or desktop PC. If you really need google maps don't use the app, make yourself a favour and install Firefox Focus on your mobile device, use the google maps website there as Firefox Focus will automatically deleted everything for you by clicking the bin icon, or if you forgot and close your phone I'm sure it deletes it history/cache/cookies automatically, made it for privacy.
Good luck at home thouhg.

Agreed. Low tech, low maintenance is the way forward.  All the above configuration guidance is valuable, that's what UKP is for, but remember it only takes one moment of forgetfulness and you could be digging your own grave

Same here, I don't need a smartphone for punting, I use that old fashioned thing pen and paper then rip the paper up. The lower the tech used the less chance of being fucked over by it in my book.

At the very least I suggest it would be in your best interest to ask the mods to remove the screenshot and specific details from your first post. Women these days, especially when they are pissed off, have the ability to become far more tech savvy than men give them credit for. If your wife is onto you she will eventually get here.

While you are all checking your phones and laptops, check the car for little magnetic tracking devices. If they want to catch you they will.

For those of you that lock the OH out of your devices are you not raising suspicion ? What are you going to do if she says let me use your phone or laptop for an hour, mines not working? Say no? Automatic guilty look.

Deleting your history will also raise suspicion, you have the app or the account but never use it ? Then the question will be asked why you have it. Did you use it at the weekend to find a garden centre or shop with her.

No matter how clever you think you are being with technology a woman scorned will find the evidence one way or another.

Offline Dipper

Easy for me to say after the event....but...

Never sign in and/or use only via a securely locked ‘other device’, certainly NEVER a shared computer of any kind.

If you must login somewhere shared, then keep any searches ‘legit’. Those unable to have a punt phone will understand this more.

All good points, depending on how individual relationships are.

Will work for some but not others.

I don’t see a timeline simply by typing my address into google maps. Although I don’t use google maps, or anything google as I believe they (Google) are the devils work! Their customers are their advertisers, service users are merely sources of data, which the more they know about helps them sell even more advertising. Google only developed Android to sell more adverts and to lock people in to their services, which ultimately sell adverts!

I use anything but google. My default search engine is DuckDuckGo and does not track me. I’m sorry the OP is having issues, privacy is a massive concern and I reiterate:- Google = the devil  :hi:

OP, man - that sucks! Another reason why it's STUPID as hell to use your personal phone as a punting tool - even more so if you have an S.O!

Some dudes say it's easier to use a personal phone than keep a punting phone hidden. General advice is, if you think your marriage is worth less than buying a throw away £10 burner phone, getting caught is proof.

A second phone isn't needed, just a second tiny sim card dedicated to punting which I don't believe any punter cant hide.

You still need to remember to turn off location history & preferably not sign into Google. A second SIM won't delete your history.

correct.  the activity of a second sim will show on the shared device.
